Sports Expansion and Some Co-location. If I were Caesar and Building Ballparks

Many team ideas have been mentioned in my blog before
and so from east to west I'd build the following:

I'd do a renovation in Buffalo, upping the number of seats so the Yankees would come to town for regular season games from time to time.  I'd build a ballyard in Albany so the Mets could do the same thing.

New ballyard in Montreal and some baseball fitting for BC Place in Vancouver.

Retractable stadium in Columbus.  The Ohio Battle Dome.  The Reds could Play in Indians there the day after Christmas some years.

Reform, Alabama (Think spreading the Jaguars across the south)
(NFL in Alabama)

I was considering a new football building in Louisville, but even Caesar had some sensibilities and I believe the community will come together, even ecologically, for a duel NCAA Cardinals support paired with a NFL Kentucky Downs franchise in the same Papa John's Stadium or whatever I would rename it.  In much of my expansion argument, even though both footballs (meaning soccer too) are only a weekend (weekly) venue,....there isn't a dire necessity to build a brand new place.  There are a lot of football stadiums in America with plenty of seats.

MLB 35,000 seat stadiums in Charlotte, Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans.

The same for Omaha, Oklahoma City, and a 40k seat park in San Marcos, Texas.

35k seater in Albuquerque, Salt Lake City and Boise.
40k in Portland, Sacramento, Riverside and Vegas.
I'd build a soccer stadium, maybe even a Major League Soccer gem in Tucson.

What about a floating baseball stadium?  Or football/soccer?  Or court/rink?
The West Coast Clippers could play basketball in a mega cruiser and dock from San Diego to Seattle.  From time to time it could venture to Alaska and Honolulu.  It could battle in the big Bay.
Could you see big league baseball floating to New Orleans?  Could you envision a Southern Bells brand?  Floating to Havana or Puerto Rico.  Docking at Virginia Beach?  Basketball around the rivers of Louisville and St. Louis?  A lot of thoughts there, right?

Hmmmm, what else?

How about some New Canadian Football League America Expansions?

And these are the cities that I could see vying for an on-deck NFL bid by flaunting their crowds in Pro Football.

It worked for the city of Baltimore.  They won a Canadian Football League championship.  And then they lured an NFL franchise to call their own, once more.

Before I talk about some future CFL thoughts, Look at where it has been before (via Wikipedia):

wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Football_League_in_the_United_States

So, I've talked about some of this before, but here are some stops I'm thinking of:

Louisville                Kentucky Downs. The NFL in Louisville

Portland

Oklahoma City              Oklahoma Oilers in the NFL

And, for the sake of being neat and clean, and doing this expansion by number of four, I'll say the Santa Fe Express sounds like a neat team.  What would I personally name Portland?  Maybe Riders, Henchmen, Phantoms or some such.  Venturing one's mind to Little Rock or Omaha is a thought also.  Little Rock Rollers.  Omaha Huskies.

But really, there are 9 teams currently in the CFL,...so what I just did there was even up the league at 12 with adding just 3 teams.  Plus I'm leaving room for 3 teams in the states for expansion with one being from the Provinces.  Keeping in line with my share-the-more-love theme, I'd love to see Halifax and some travel-team love for some towns in Canada under the name Nord Navy or Norsemen.  I like that and the top 3 American cities above-mentioned that have never been in the league before.

The NBA in Montreal. And Paris. Internationale Monarchs

I'd wager, as a fellow in my thirties, I won't live to see the NBA in Montreal.  I'll likely see it in Seattle again and in the new digs of Louisville.  Nope, not Montreal.  I might've even mentioned a shared team between Vancouver and Montreal called "North Country", for more than one sport actually.  Flights, LumberJacks, the Nord Force, you name it.

But I know that the leagues like the eventuality of branching out across bodies of water into the western world.  My brain recalls the NBA talking of this well before the NFL.  So, yeah, throwing London or Paris into a mix seems like a desire.  I think the Celtics part-timing it in Belfast and Dublin from time to time would be most successful.  But I'm not talking about Ireland and the United Kingdom at this moment.  I'm thinking for the likes of Africa and the French speaking world, including the second largest French speaking city, Montreal.

Paris is twice the size of Montreal and the population combination for them both is around 15 million folks.  And French is spoken in more than 3 continents, and only one continent so far has the NBA and the other Big 4.

So what do you think of a team that wears an array of jerseys, sometimes saying "Internationale", some saying Monarchs, Montreal and/or Paris?  Think Arabs and Africans.  I bet you the Internationale name would garner a lot of attention in many places, especially in the field of apparel.

What Cities would be left for Major League Expansion after my Regional Expansions, 2016

I have a few options stated throughout my blog to bring more OR FEWER teams to more cities in the next expansion or franchise relocation in any of the sports.  So, if you live in a place like Boise, Idaho and think you won't see a big league team to call your own hometown brand in your lifetime, I want to plant possibility in your eyes.

There are more games in the season to be played for baseball, basketball and hockey.  There's fewer for the footballs but to be environmentally friendly, there are a lot of places with a lot of seats already in existence for MLS and NFL games to be played.  Sure, they might not meet contemporary luxury box standards of this pinnacle leagues, but the thoughts are much more environmentally friendly.  Hell, I'd love to have an Ohio MLS team like "Ohio Divided" splitting time between football stadiums in Cleveland and Cincinnati.

But anyway, here are a few examples for such possibilities of sharing.

Place of Play Expansion (Tag Team (Co-Location)), Name Expansion (and regional exhibition), possibly as a rebrand.  An example of this would be the NBA's Clippers and what woulda' or shoulda' or coulda' happened with them under new ownership.  Just change the name to the West Coast Clippers.  Consider playing in Las Vegas and Seattle from time to time.  Same thing with NHL's Coyotes.

The idea of league expansion could occur as an expansion team or relocation/co-location of an existing team.

Major League Baseball:
I have covered many city franchise-share ideas in many of my blog posts.  Check it out.

What's maybe left after I got some of the cities on deck for expansion covered?  Whose in the hole?
Names like Nashville, Memphis, and New Orleans. Maybe what?  The year 2040?  But what if the Marlins relocated part-time to Tampa and the Rays become the Southland Rays of Nashville and Charlotte?

That's what would be left after what I'd do now.  Maybe.  Some of these towns even aren't on the fence right now.

Further down the road, whatta' we got?
Little Rock, Omaha, San Antonio.  Stuff like that.  Like Oklahoma City.

It's years and years and decades for the likes of Albuquerque or Boise.

I see this down the road, but maybe way down the road from Salt Lake City of some Salt Lake Frozen brand.  Seattle and Portland, we all know will be before those though.

East Coast Whalers of Norfolk and Hartford. A Two Place Team in the NHL

Major League Soccer

Answer:  A lot of major league cities to look at.

Map of Major League Looks for MLS
Arizona Major League Soccer Franchise should be placed in Tucson
Let's Get a Bootleggers Major League Soccer Brand in the South
The Chivas should've been moved to Las Vegas Part-Time

Can you see some of the pictures I'm painting here?

I see this sharing way as the difference for getting a team or more in 20 to 40 years as opposed to a hundred years away for the likes of SLC, OKC, Albuquerque, Austin, Boise, Louisville, Birmingham, Omaha and Virginia Beach.  Proximity is an issue.  Close but not too close is the business way for the shared (but regional) identity with two or more places to play for one team, like Rangers baseball being in San Antonio and Dallas metro and the Marlins being in Miami as well as Tampa.  That's not to say I haven't schemed up international ideas of sharing for the likes of Tampa/Monterrey and Las Vegas/Montreal.
Las Vegas Montreal Internationals in the MLB
Gulf Run Rays. Major League Baseball in Monterrey, New Orleans and Tampa

Use your imagination to envision more play in more places.

What say you?

Ohio Flights and Kentucky Horsemen for an NBA Expansion

3 million people are in the Cincinnati-Dayton Metroplex and throw in the million more in central Ohio for the commute.

Pacers taking on the Flights, taking on the Cavs and then the Horsemen.  That's a tight region of basketball, akin to Philly, NYC and the Bowash Corridor.  A Louisville team a hundred miles away from the Pacers and another near Dayton 100 miles away.  It's more than 200 miles away from all these in Cleveland.

Choosing only one for an east west expansion and alignment I would default to Kentucky.

a former indoor football team -click-
I can't think of some better team cities in the east for the NBA.  Virginia Beach, blah.  Jacksonville or Tampa, blah.  Already have enough in those regions.  DC wizzingbulletwizards and the bobcathornet with the Magic.  Sure, Virginia might not thinks it's Washington but that's too bad.
Birmingham, maybe they have a case of no real saturation.

I'm convinced.  Flights and Horsemen.

What do you think in the heartland and east?

Say No to two Los Angeles NFL Teams

It's plainly annoying I even have to say it.  I'd rather have it in Salt Lake City than doubled up in LA, especially the same stadium.  Hell, even Boise.

Is it going to be the LA Rams and California Raiders?  Even with the drumbeat of my theme in calling a team the West Coast Raiders, I object wholesale for a second squad being LA only.   Split time with Vegas or Portland and I'm with it.

I know it's a weekly venue but spread the love of an NFL nation.

Don't steal San Diego's turf tough guys either.

Pete Rose Should Coach Baseball in Cincinnati

Let's start an amateur baseball league with a Westside and Eastside division.

We can raise funds for two ballparks, one on each side of town and have Pete Rose be a periodic guest instructor and manager for teams.  If MLB and the Reds don't show out enough for baseball and Cincinnati, let Cinci people take baseball back.

(Here, I'm putting a place mark for some more schemes later)

Whether little league, Roy Hobbs or some new organized way, let's get'er done.

Envision some names.

Do Carolina and the Caps Screw Virginia Beach-Hampton Roads Out of a Shot?

Look at the map.  Yeah it does.

But there are rumbles:  nhl.nbcsports.com/2015/12/11/virginia-beach-arena-developer-to-aggressively-pursue-nhl-team

Are we talking New Jersey level population and proximity?  Less than 180 miles is the distance from D.C. but the Caroline is right up against their shoulders.  Less than 2 million people in the area don't make it a slam dunk for hockey.  Yep, slippery from the NBA, also.

Before, I have ran my mouth that the most likely eastern American candidate would be Indianapolis.
I offered a solution to Virginia Beach awhile ago:

East Coast Whalers of Norfolk and Hartford. A Two-Place Team in the NHL

I'm not sure who I would think to be braver with the Beach, the Association or League (because of their Vegas flashings).  Competition in the east is with Louisville b-ball, which is sure to get the nod, so I'm guessing it would be the big VA when it's hockey time and there are 36 or 38 teams in the league, certainly with the current model for teams and expansions.  Just think, there are going to be 34 teams and Seattle and Portland likely aren't in on the deal yet.

What I Want for Christmas. Some Sports Expansion Teams

What I Want for Christmas.  West Coast Athletics, Clippers, Coyotes and Raiders.  The LA Rams.  Southlakes Panthers instead of just Florida. West Coast Ghosts and more

It's not quite world peace, but there would be some elation or euphoria for Portland, LA, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Charlotte and others.

Something is better than nothing and some of these cities would take part in a big league team in a league that they don't currently have....and would have had to wait years and years for, if not decades, and if not for my tag-town-team travel-team-like idea.  The NBA did it in the 70s with Missouri and Nebraska.  ( Kansas City-Omaha Kings )

And maybe some of my thoughts could come off as a Grinch or lump of coal of sorts for St. Louis, Tampa and Oakland.  But like I've blogblabbed before, Tampa could split time with Miami for the reinvigorated brand of the Florida Marlins.  Oakland could do the same with the California Angels for a southern/northern California split-time.  And they can still remain big league baseball cities with no need to rebuild.

Miami's ice hockey could be shared with Atlanta or even the likes of Austin, Texas.

Being even more generous with my wish in addition to the likes of Austin, places like Omaha, Boise, Fargo, Honolulu, San Diego and Anchorage could get in on some of the seats.  More television would sure follow.  And that's where the real big money is.

My wishes have been spouted, ever evolving and shifty in just a couple of years, but check some of them out.

July 2014:  Me as Sports Dictator. I Build. I Expand. Divide. And Conquer?!
Aug 2015:  Next Major League Expansion Team: The Czar of Sports and ...

So, anyway, there are some.  My more reasonable choices in the current market are relocation or co-location of existing teams.  I'd bring big baseball to Nashville and Charlotte, along with Portland and Las Vegas.  Baseball's rebirth in Montreal would include sharing in Vancouver.  Click below:

Major League Baseball in Vancouver and Montreal. Make it one team. North Country Lumberjacks
The Clippers of the West Coast would fill vacancies.  So would the Rams and Raiders.  Seattle and Portland would get hockey and Las Vegas would, also, with a share.  A Great Lakes brand would bring it to the love and likes of Milwaukee, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Indianapolis.  Hartford and Hampton Roads in on the action.  And many more.

Florida Panthers can be ridiculous. Co-Locate the Team. Rebrand. Southlakes Fisherman.

Desired Expansion in the CFL ?

This article helped school me and get my bearings:  vavel.com/en-us/canada/507925-the-next-step-for-the-cfl-expansion

I have spouted before that as far as a major football expansion, I've only found Toronto and Louisville to be slam dunks today in the NFL.  Maybe Birmingham.  They had a CFL team before.  Other old looks that maybe look good are San Antonio and Las Vegas.

The CFL stands at 9 teams, so a tenth would help even it out.  I looked at the list to include French and greater Toronto towns, and though I like the idea of Halifax, I like Louisville more.  CFL basically put the Ravens and Baltimore back on the Super Bowl map, so I'm very confident Kentucky would take to the pro brand representation up north.  And with another expansion, we could see a Halifax - Las Vegas ushering.

Okay, so my vote is my schemed Kentucky Downs.
(check it out:  Kentucky Downs. The NFL in Louisville  )

 Also check this and those:
Another Canadian MLB Franchise? Vancouver Athletics and Raiders? And the Norde Force Canadian NFL Team

I have a lot of confidence in the CFL being bold.

Expansion of Locationing. The Drafts

Look at the Draft locations for the Big Five sports leagues.  I'm referring to the site where they're publicly maneuvering for Draft Picks into the leagues.

Just thinking that there could be some more rotation going on.  My lovely Cincinnati is hosting the All-Star Game this year.  Share the love with the rest of the league.

NYC does football, right?

It's been in NYC the last 50 years.

Before that, other places have been Philadelphia, D.C., Chicago, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and the City of Angels.

How about we try some other spots?
espn

How are these other leagues doing it?
NBA.  Is it NYC?

The NHL does a circuit nowadays:  nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=31885

MLS?  They do a circuit of sorts wherever the National Coaches Convention is held.  Last year was in Philly.  January 2016 will be in Baltimore.

MLB:  Geepers creepers this is tough.  Maybe I should've posted this after I found and answer, but I'm just out of patience.  Not a lot of pomp behind America's pastime.

Where are these drafts being held?  Perhaps MLB will come out with an MLB2 Network when they feel there is room for more dollars and will make more pomp and ceremony of the MLB Draft.  Business is still evolving and the money marketing is being staggered.  They'll likely start re-runs of the draft so as not to jump on top of the games as they're being played.

See what I'm cookin'?

If you ask me, it looks like the Big 3 need to get with it more like hockey and soccer.

We all would like to see the stuff up close.

Major League Soccer Expansion to Rochester. The Empire Statesmen

They could even do exhibition or rotation with Syracuse and Albany.  The area is one of those passionate pockets of the international game of football, aka soccer.  I know that many high schools in the Upstate enclaves don't have enough students to field a high school football program, especially north of Albany.  Western NY might not have as much a problem with that, but nonetheless, in Rochester, while I have no figures before me, there are probably more teenagers per capita playing soccer there than a lot of the nation.

It should get more consideration from MLS.  With the whole per capita I mentioned and ambiance soccer minded people are aware of, I'm a little surprised the Carolina region isn't getting much love looks from the league either.  I would've figured them before Atlanta.  But anyway... .

With the western and upstate New York areas, and an occasional match played in Syracuse or Albany, I believe the imposing name of Empire playing big time against Boston's hubbed brand and the rest of the country would kick some ass.

States with the most Major League Towns

Cali has Sacramento, San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego.  Count 'em six.  Well, I suppose seven with Anaheim and their Canadian migratory love, it's really more.

Florida has four.

Texas has 3.  Arlington Rangers is four for a stretch?
Same for Ohio.
Are Spurs, Rockets and Mavs b-ball sister cities?
Same for the buroughs and Buffalo of New York.
With hockey, I suppose you can say 2 Carolina with their brand of hockey.
PA has two.  Same with Missouri.  Tennessee too.  Arizona technically.

In any one sport, California has four MLB towns.  Or is it 5?  Yep.  East LA Angels of California.  They have 3 hockeys.

If Los Angeles Gave up a NBA Team

A first name change:  West Coast Clippers

Get more buy-in and/or even participation in markets from San Diego, Seattle and up and down the coast again with Honolulu and Anchorage.  I've pitched it in this blog before.  Las Vegas could be lumped in there.

I believe the NBA dropped the ball.  And it was disappointing to me that they couldn't do something innovative and stayed with convention and comfort in a repeat performance of LA basketball.  A double-dribble if you will.  After-all, they did something cool before:  the Kansas City-Omaha Kings.  Was that such a disaster?  Isn't some better than none for the likes of Missouri and Nebraska?

Some Soccer Expansion Team Name Considerations

Sure, it might be way down the road, but FC this and FC that all the time seems a little lackluster to a kiddy brain such as myself.  I like some twist to a more traditional "United" and Americanafying it to "Divided", as in the case with a Cincinnati/Cleveland share (with Columbus in between) and "Excited", which is more modern.

San Diego Football Padres    FC Madre Padre

The Brooklyn Football Dodgers

Santa Fe-El Paso Express

FC Southwest (Tucson-Albuquerque or El Paso)

Midland Road Warriors of Oklahoma City-Omaha

St. Louis     Rafts
FC Louis with Louisville and New Orleans, the Crown? I dislike the Cards enough to not give the town    the Shield because it sounds so awesome.  St. Louis Shield?

Cincinnati Arsenal, the Monarchs?

Ohio United of Toledo/Cleveland

Dakota Diesel
North Coast Truckers

Could we go even Beyond Region with concerns to my tag-team-towns model?

FC Seaboard or .... or FC Navy
Baltimore, Newport News, Jacksonville and Hartford?  The East Coast Navy.  Shipmen?
D.C. Baltimore United? Could it be? Congrats on the new Stadium.

East Coast Brigade.  Would that gain an army veteran following?

Some of the ones that can be seen in my blog before are Ohio Divided, Texas Excited......
Ohio United. Or call it an Ohio Divided Team. Cincinnati-Dayton Metroplex
Texas Excited and more MLS Presence Out West

Nothing more flavorful than Sacramento Republic, or is that how it works,...a promotion?
