Hometown Mindset as a Sports Brand

Okay, say the Chicago Bears wear a Cubs or White Sox jersey one day.  Or the Bulls wearing a Bears or a Cubs wearing a Bears, or the Bulls doing a Blackhawks, or a Fire wearing the Sox and on and on.  It's more than something like Bulls nation at that point.  It's Chicago Nation.

How badass is a Celtics baseball jersey near the Green Monster for a day?
Reds wearing a Bengals?  Whoa, how Zubaz is that?

Laker Dodgers
Charger Padres
Mariner Seahawks, Knick Mets, Indian Cavs, Pirate Penguins, Philly 76ers, Giant Niners....

Google "mlb team nhl hockey jersey".  Below, see the NHL's Blue's Cardinals Jersey.  And my ECHL affiliate Cincinnati Cyclones wearing their Reds jersey.

Should Spring Training be more than just in Diamondbacks and Marlins Country? Maps of Spring Trng

OLD MAP.  When the Reds were in Florida, before Arizona.  Note, when my Reds were there, 20 teams.

Did you know that the first spring training site was Hot Springs, Arkansas?
Some places after that were Tulsa, OK and New Orleans.
And training for awhile was north of the Ohio River to conserve resources for the war effort (WWII).

wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_training#History

For now, 15 teams each are in Arizona and Florida and it's good for their economies.

Logistically and business-wise, the relatively close proximity of the teams to each other makes sense as it is.  But I still can't help but think about stretching out a bit to the likes of New Mexico and New Orleans.  Both places have Triple-A ballyards.  Perhaps these sites could host games between the best four records of Spring Training for the Goodtime Game.

Brand Expand

Oakland, even if you don't share one of your teams with Las Vegas and/or Portland you can create more belonging as a powerbrand with a small name change:  the West Coast Athletics.  Or Raiders.
Golden State California has worked out for you.  Instead of totally relocating as a franchise, consider co-locating.  You wouldn't want a fan base embassy in Vegas?!

What teams could do something like this and lay claim much like Carolina and New England franchise brands?  At least do something with Tampa and maybe bring the Florida Marlins name back.

Minor League All-Stars versus Major League Teams. Troop Weeks.

MLB's building of a ballpark on Fort Bragg Military Installation naturally got me thinking about what other bases could use something like that.  And, how could it be mutually beneficial to have more such ballparks on other bases with MLB footing the bill?

My suggestion is for the first year do two weeks of these games with the minor league all-star taking on four MLB clubs, and from the second year on do 3 weeks, where an All-Star ensemble comprised of MiLB players are slated to take on Big League ball teams.  Think about how the casts of guys can show out against their parent level clubs.  It could be a great barometer (for inflation) as to whether MLB is ready for expansion based on talent.  And these games could be played at these 12,500 seat new military ballparks that could be built.  It can energize Americans for all levels of pro baseball.  It could be called:  Battle for the Big Time or Battle of the Big Leagues.  And wouldn't it be nifty for the minor league team to be called the Recruits or Troops.  Nifty showcase.

There are plenty of big bases.  Let me list some of the love.
It's in North Carolina now.
Go for the Tennessee-Kentucky border in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  Kick off that week with a 6,000-seater at Fort Knox.

Near Austin and not far from San Antonio is Fort Hood, Texas.

The troops of JBLM near Seattle could just attend such a game at the House of the Mariners.  Fort Benning is next in line as far as population.

I know, in the future we can consider some other services like the Navy.

I'm not sexist.  There are women that can whoop my ass.

Florida has 3 NFL Teams....But Not Texas. Huh.

Give it a thought:  If you were surveyed as naming the top 5 things you think about when you hear these two states.  Let me give you mine.

Florida:  Beaches, Breezes, Humidity, Alligators and Spring Training.  From my youth, and time, Florida certainly evokes the baseball more than Arizona.

Texas:  Cowboy hats, firearms, ranchers, the Alamo and football.

The last expansions brought the NFL back to Texas, so that Texas has one less team than the state of Florida.

But of course I don't forget the long line: like OKC, Louisville, Toronto or even Las Vegas and Portland.
It'll just be nice when the Jaguars leave.  Blah blah to SEC country.  And now that it's back in LA, almost all is well.

Texas Rangers MLB Camp possibilty and another Dallas team

It's all in the name Texas Rangers, turf-wise anyway.  Sizable cities such as El Paso, San Antonio and Austin (in Central Texas being relatively close to each other) are cities without much big ball representation.  While they do have minor league clubs, Houston and Dallas enjoy their locks on the markets for the big time in Tejas.

Both the Rangers and Cowboys flirt with San Antonio with some appearances.  And without any knowledge of it, I'm sure the Houston Texans brand takes effort to physically market its claim as well.  If more regular season MLB stuff happened in the likes of Austin, San Marcos or San Antone, I've argued Dallas could have a D-town named National League counterpart to the Rangers, someday.

Ft. Bliss and El Paso make for a good location to touch down on every now and again.  It could be a draw for some New Mexicans, military personnel and Texans alike.  Corpus Christi has a navy base with over 40,000 people.  Wouldn't it be nifty for some kind of Texas Americans jersey on the bases from time to time?

MLB is playing a game at a newly built stadium in North Carolina at the big military base.  Ft. Hood is the other big base in America.  That would be a good army place to play in Texas, and it's not 100 miles north of the Texas capital.

Texas Rangers Team America jerseys and maybe another team for America's largest metro area without two MLB teams (just shy of Boston and before Philly in that notion) could be a neat thought.  And with all of that, central Texas and the western part of the state, all the most populated places without much representation, can receive some love.  Of course this is nothing to say of spreading to other parts first, like Oklahoma City and Charlotte.  Whatta' ya' think?

MLB Building a Ballpark at Army Base and Playing in Middle of Season

On July 3rd, the Braves and Marlins will play at a U.S. Military base in North Carolina and 12,500 troops will attend at the ballpark built for the game and for future use for people living on the installation.

fayobserver.com/military/braves-marlins-to-play-at-fort-bragg-mlb-to-build

It will be the largest capacity ballpark in North Carolina.
And yes, in the future I will envision scenarios for tag team play between facilities at the likes of Ft. Knox, Hood and Riley.

Does More MLB in Texas Make Sense in Next Expansion?

After all, there is Oklahoma City.
And there's Charlotte.
Would there be a central alignment called for with someone like them or Nashville, Indianapolis, Portland and Las Vegas?  Wild card considerations like Havana or Puerto Rico could be in the mix. The French question and population fact still is a charm in Montreal.

texasmonthly.com___mlb-expansion-inevitable-austin-maybe

A moonshot fits a lot of possibility if we put our domes together.  Moon to earth.
Austin has close competition obviously, that being San Antonio, literally and figuratively.  Austin has the edge with money.  San Antone with population.

It would just be wonderful if the Rays or A's moved to fill in some of those above voids.

Sorry, but this lecture is going to a take a turn for hockey.
The next Texas might be hockey.  It would be great if the Las Vegas thing weren't right now, because the addition of two rightfully Canadian teams in inevitable, and there are plenty of vacancies from Portland, Seattle, and Indianapolis to the likes of east Virginia's Hampton Roads area.  Central hockey could be argued, especially aesthetically for the Dakotas and Omaha or Lincoln in Nebraska, much like ambiance could carry hockey in Canada over solid business measures.  And somewhat in that sense, and as a balance to most markets outside of New York (and sports outside of MLS) being over-saturated as it is, I would argue for the NHL to definitely be in Austin over Houston.  Houstonians could just drive there.  And I'd urge for a Texas-named and themed team.  The Texas Stars play in Austin as a minor league affiliate of the Dallas Stars.  Good name and smart thinkin'.

As I have blabbed about before with San Marcos being an in between for a weekly trek of national football or major league football (NFL, MLS) between the cities of Austin and San Antonio, that might not be the best location for baseball.  And with the existence of a Texas named team, there would be the pesky issue of figuring the namebrand.  Central Texas Tornadoes?  The Rangers spending more time in central Texas, San Antonio and/or it's capitol could work.  That would free up justification for Dallas having a National League team in the future:

Does the Existence of Predators make Atlanta good for Next Go-Around in NHL?

I believe it does make for a geographic rivalry indeed.
But this is how I would do it:  the Southlakes Panthers for one year.  And the next year, I'd re-designate them as the Southlakes Fishermen.  And the Florida Panthers would be no more.  It would be a tag-team for Miami and Atlanta.  I have blog blabbed about it before:

Atlanta.  The Thrashers played here.

Would it be good for Portland to land a team at the same time as Seattle?  I'm for combo team for them too.  Separations can always come forward in the future.  But a West Coast, Gray Coast or North Coast brand sounds neat, does it not?

Wouldn't Southlakes Fisherman apparel transcend hockey in the south?

International MLB Expansion: Big City Triangle and a Bigger East to West Stretch

I'm almost done talking about baseball bouncing from greater Florida Marlin Grapefruit for-Snowbirds Country (Rays or Yankees area of Tampa) and the other Bay.  Regional Sports Networks (which should want to broaden to at least Sacramento or Portland from the San Fran A's area since the baseball teams are merely about 20 miles apart) are probably going to keep the anchors in both Bays, including the big television market of Tampa.  So let me just go with an international expansion instead of hoping for some relocation.

When expansion comes bring it back to more of Canada.  Get Las Vegas over with.  And add Mexico and Puerto Rico to the mix, all as the same team.  How does a Monterrey and Mexico City part-time deal with 2 other cities in the American territory sound?  Wink wink, Las Vegas and Puerto Rico.

Whether some 200 or over 350 miles would separate the largest cities in the northeast if Montreal would come back to MLB, there's your big city triangle with Beantown and NYC.  Baltimore and D.C. are less than 200 miles from NYC and of course Philly is a shorter distance than that.  But I was going for something that wasn't a trapezoid.  The Mets or Yanks can be whichever point you want.  But we know the Expos will be playing in the National League.  And against the Nationals.  Yeah.  Sacrebleu.

Maybe a little off the rails and a little artsy:  think about a Las Vegas team that splits time with Mexico and even Puerto Rico.  Before, I have thought about the "International Expos" with Montreal.  But what about Aviones y Vegas (translated: Airplanes and  Meadows (for which Vegas had and was named for by Spanish peoples))?  "Airplanes and Vegas" is Aviones y Vegas.  Sites from the west coast to the east coast would justify placement in whatever division needs a fit.
