Randumb Quickie about Team Naming. Advertising and Player Naming. A Quickie.

If I were a grub hungry agent of the likes of let's say 'LeeBraun James, I'd play an angle with the player's association.

For a billion,
I'd easily be Paul Coca-Cola Stone.
LeeBraun Pepsi James?

Gamecallers have to use it as part of my name,....any mention.  The number 23 car.  Nope.  The number 23 person.  Number 23 Coke.

My Team wears Toyota.  The 76ers wear Stub Hub.  What about the player, play on playuh???

All in a Name. What to Name a Team?

I haven't mentioned Vegas because there seems to be a love for the dollar over the likes of the ambiance for Nordique lands.  And so maybe it's about growing the game.  But next to Arizona and it's wild west, fewer roots, growing pains.  And skipping right over more tradition in Portland and Seattle,...but I'll drink a beer looking like Kermit the Frog.

All the best to them.  Hopefully the seats in Vegas doesn't feel like the Rays or even turns out like the Marlins.

Below is a site talking about some recent sportage naming.

But what do you think?  I think a good name is something that tips the hat to homage, uniqueness, or aspirations to the area represented.  Incorporating one or more of those is a plus.  Or I guess something mean and ferocious works.

cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/las-vegas-nhl-expansion-1.3641591

Yep, Nevada.  Anyone with a good clip of time in a dessert knows the drop can sometimes make it feel like Penguins can walk by at night.  So, I guess Coyotes are welcome.  Um.

But wouldn't have the West Coast Coyotes as a shared tag team be better?  With anyone?  Seattle?  Portland?  Vegas?  Even something shared with Austin really (Western?).  I wrote about it.

Unless I have a Team in the Bigs, I Could Care Less

And by less, I mean I can care less than I could care more.

For me, as a born Cincinnatian, that refers to the NHL, NBA and MLS.

I liked watching national network games as I was held hostage by the urban Winter.  So, I enjoyed Michael Jordan and even stretched my mind, just miles away to Indiana to root on an occassional view of Reggie Miller,... but I didn't set my clock to the NBA at all.  Every once in awhile I saw hockey cards at K-Mart I think.  Soccer was for kids that weren't good at baseball as far as my world was concerned.  Who could afford hockey equipment on a whim back in the day in Cinci?

Even as a Cincinnatian that may periodically desire a bigger broader winner like Ohio State during some droughts, whom OSU I don't really root for, I'm pretty much Cinci or nothing.  We're by virtue of being first, baseball royalty always.  And Cincinnati is kind of its own state.  Our past is one of being at odds with Cleveland.  And it was nice that Bearcats basketball was essentially my pro team and went to the Final Four.  It felt that way anyway for us and basketball.  And having the AHL and ECHL teams at the same time, Mighty Ducks and Cyclones, was nifty too.   When homeboys broke out on the scene, I remember seeing some dudes on the west side buy roller skates and the roller pucks with sticks.  But I was never watching NHL.  I watched more Blades of Steel than NHL.  I'm not sure I looked at box scores beyond figuring which province states had teams in the 80s or 90s.

Cities like Atlanta no doubt have some hockey loving leftovers.  Who knows when it will return.  Like with the bigger pro ball basketball for the likes of Cinci, Pittsburgh, St. Louis or Louisville.

Sure, it's fun watching LeeBraun take on Curry, but it ain't my city.  Not sure,...were Raiders fans from Los Angeles rooting for them when they were in Oakland again?

MLB Right Now for these Places

Some of these cities could make it feasibly happen in 2020, especially with an unconventional outlook.
Out of these places in the east, which one first?

Montreal?
2015 Census
Charlotte?
New Jersey?

     West:
Portland
Las Vegas

The largest city in North America is Mexico City.  Ninth is Montreal.  Havana is top 10.  Monterrey 23rd.  Central Texas?  California A's in Sacramento and Oakland?

My part-time place idea alleviates concern for lackluster sustainability.
If North Country played in a few Canadian cities and the likes of Portland and Las Vegas split time for a "West Coast" named team, no doubt.

Think of a second team in or around Boston.  And 40 to 50 of the East Coast Patriots games were played in Charlotte.  Boom.

Future Rivalries in Major League Soccer

Let me jump past the coattails of the above linked writing.

There was an Orange-out in Cincinnati to take on the shitty, ...I mean to say "city" colors of Pittsburgh in a USL matchup with a crowd that beat out many o' MLS games.

Yeah, Cincinnati Pittsburgh in all brands of football.
Cinci and the Crew or against Indy would be something.

Whenever there's Nashville and Charlotte with some Atlanta United (suburbs?).
I've argued those should be the two regional tag team towns combining for an Appalachia United Bootleggers brand.

Austin and San Antonio.

It is said now of Chicago and Minnesota.  Revolution versus New York ones?
I  assume but don't know Portland and Seattle.  Or Vancouver or some such.
Los Angeles and the Quakes?  A KC Saint Louey' isn't far off.

There are a lot of cities missing from the momentum.  Detroit is one.  Is Honolulu ever going to get something?   Little Rock Legs sometime?  Alabama Bootleggers?  I still don't know why two New Yorks but not one New Jersey in name in place.

Yes, MLS has a way to go.  But in perspective, it won't take long.  Footballs all year long.

Personal Favorite Exponential Expansion Team Schemes

And these are the current favorites out of my many unconventional musings throughout my blog pages.

North Country Baseball for Canada.  Played in Vancouver and Montreal.  40 games each.
West Coast A's.  And this is the Athletics splitting time between Portland and Las Vegas.  I'm not even sure that Oakland should be in the picture.  What about San Jose?  Or even Sacramento?
Florida Marlins, again.   So, no more Rays...in Tampa-St. Pete.
California Angels again, ...here's your share, Sacramento.

Ya' know what, a Southland Band brand could play from Charlotte, thru Nashville to Memphis and New Orleans, if you think about it.

Southlakes Fisherman NHL team in Atlanta
Great Lakes brand hockey in Milwaukee and Cleveland.  Sometimes in Indy and Cinci.
West Coast brand for Seattle, Portland and sometimes Vegas and Anchorage.
East Coast Whalers in Hartford again, and then Hampton Roads.

Norde Force, NFL Canada's team that camps throughout CFL Canada.
Kentucky Downs

Louisville Stallions?
Ohio Flights in Dayton
West Coast Clippers with some time docked in San Diego and Seattle instead of doubled up around Hollywood.

Appalachia United Bootleggers
Some "Divided" logo imagery?
Think of a Teamsters or Local Union Workers emblem.  They look like NASCAR racers alright.
AUB?
Texas Divided in San Marcos, Texas.
Ohio Divided in Cinci or Dayton and either Cleveland or Toledo.
Arizona United in Tucson.
West Coast Diamond Club shared with Vegas instead of just another LA team.

MetroStars was a better name than Red Bulls. Opinion

And certainly more sensible than "just", "New York".
A mannerism like Mango from SNL
One day, the club could be called the Bridgecrossers.

wikipedia.org______New_York_Red_Bulls

See, yes, the New York Red Bulls before bought by Red Bull was less of a bunch of bull, and was a broader name for the blokes and broads of New Jersey, while also playing in the suburbs of New York in New Jersey.  But like all New York footballs.  In New Jersey.

I get it.  In Covington, Kentucky you can see the Reds baseball park and root for the Reds or Bengals across the river as a born and red Kentuckian.

MetroStars.  The New York-New Jersey Metrostars.
Why not Jersey York MetroStars?

Because FC Cincinnati is Toyota and the Crew is Barbasol.

Because because because because.  Becuz!  Because of the wonderful things we does.... .

I have said before, if I was LeeBraun James, I'd be a billionaire  as Lebron Coca-Cola James for play-by-plays calling my full name out each non-number reference.

Louisville Stallions
Ohio Heights or Flights housed in Dayton.  Close enough to Cinci and C-bus

Las Vegas Aces High
Seattle Sonics reborn
West Coast Clippers play in San Diego sometimes.  Also Honolulu.

NHL 2050

36 Teams?  38?

Here's what I would like to see:

Great Lakes Shoremen in Milwaukee and Cleveland
                sometimes in Cincinnati and Indy
Austin Texans
Southlakes Fishermen brand of Atlanta
West Coast Whales in Las Vegas and Portland
sometimes in Anchorage.  Some Honolulu love?
Seattle Shippers.  Or maybe Horsemen or Phantoms
Omaha-Dakota Midlakes (Nebraska-Dakota) Diesel

Or what about the East Coast Whalers in Hartford and Hampton like I've blogged about?
I didn't forget about the Nordiques.  What about the Ontario Golden Horsemen?
These tag teams have been blogged about a little more in depth within the blog.

MLB 2050

Let's say what, 36 teams?

Carolina Truckers
Portland Express
Monterrey Mexican Rays
Montreal Expos

What I'd like:
The Florida Marlins of Miami ....and Tampa.
And the West Coast Athletics of Oakland (or Sacramento) and Las Vegas.  Or Portland.  And have the West Coast Express.  You know, ...something a little more exponential for MLB and America.
Love my multi-nodal idea of the North Country 'Jacks up in Vancouver and Montreal.
That's 35 teams.  What about the 36th?  A team-two for Dallas.  One for Jersey?  Check out some selections in my blog.

NFL 2050

Maybe some convention along these lines is what you will see:
And some of these come in expansions of twos.  40 NFL teams by 2050?

London Jaguars
Toronto Fleet

Louisville Horsemen
Portland Highwaymen

California Chargers, housed in Sacramento
San Antonio Raiders or Texas Raiders

Las Vegas Daredevils
OKC Oilers

Lingerie Football in the United Kingdom
What I would do in naming if I was glorious Dictator:
West Coast Raiders with Las Vegas in addition to Oakland
California Chargers playing in San Diego and Sacramento
Oregon Express
Oklahoma Oilers
Kentucky Downs
Nord Force of Toronto and all CFL Stadius
UK Knights (London Kingsmen?)

....and what would that leave out?  Birmingham.  Salt Lake City.  NFL in Mexico, Sur Toros.

Look in my blog.  I've written of these guys as prospective franchises....like the Kentucky Downs in Louisville.

So many ways to go counting beyond 38 teams.
It could be the Alabama Elephants coming into the league with the Sur Toros.  It could even be the Utah Express or Omaha Express coming into the league with the Boise Bluelegs.  What will 2050 look like in the NFL?

A Map of Sports Cosmology. Draw one up

Go ahead, create it.  Get it out of your system.

Do this, especially if you're from Montreal, Charlotte, Las Vegas, San Antonio, Austin or Portland.
Envision the Boise Blue Sox.

Dream up your Toronto and Louisville NFL teams.

Go overseas.

Come up with your hometown team expansion.  Be honest with yourself and then say which places will probably get it before your town will.

Take it out as far as you please:

You can or take it out to the Tokyo Dragons or Berlin Bears.  And do it in whatever sport.  Get Indianapolis, Nashville and Charlotte out of your system.  London and Paris basketball.  Our Aussie pals geographically suit for alignment in some kind of an Asian division.
The way I do it is to make regional teams by combining towns.   I expedite the growth. For instance, a North Country Lumberjacks or Nord Force squad for all of Canada can include Vancouver and Montreal in the mix in one fell swoop.  Think of the Sur Toros in Mexico for Monterrey and Mexico City.  Those cities being on different ends of the country can average out where the teams are aligned in the league.

Tennessee brand baseball would put two medium sized MLB stadiums in the state, one in Memphis and one in Nashville.  Portland and Las Vegas could be taken care of in this fashion for a west coast named brand.   A rationale could even be stretched for East Coast International Expos baseball being played in Charlotte and Montreal.  You could lump Puerto Rico in there.  You could scheme up some kind of Midland brand for San Antonio, Austin, OKC, Kansas City and Omaha for all of the big leagues.  I've done it throughout my blog.  If you living in North or South Dakota, creativity could put you in the big leagues,...just do it part-time as a tag-team.

Do you have any dream schemes?

NFL Team for London is Trying Too Hard .... for now anyway

Because

Kentucky Downs

                 Nord Force

Oregon Express

                    Oklahoma Oilers

Those teams being respectively in Louisville, Toronto, Portland and OKC.
I've blabbed about them in my blog before.
A team could be in Canada or Mexico.
Get your head out from up under 'yer...from out under 'er.... uh
Toronto and/or Monterrey.
Just to name a handful.

Nothing to say of central Texas, Las Vegas, Birmingham.  And on and on.

But let London have Jacksonville.

Check out some links:

NFL in Louisville
OKC Oilers NFL Team

Having holes in Portland, Louisville, Birmingham and Toronto gives me the feels for filling in gaps.  Florida has 3 big time teams while Texas does not.  I have this angst expressed throughout the blog.
In all of sports some consolidation can close some of these gaps in a hurry.  2 teams could become four or more towns instead of just two towns.  A Norde Force and North Country team would explode the television and apparel money to new bounds.  Taking the Oakland A's woes and sharing them with Las Vegas as the West Coast brand could do wonders and alleviate of any concerns of hesitation into part-time towns.  Am I crazy or can't this happen for Tampa and Oakland on the diamond?  Tampa should share the Marlins and the A's should be shared between Vegas and Oaktown.  We can fill voids in Austin/San Antonio, Portland and Charlotte quicker using a two town team.

The Big Ones. Or Two or More Sizeable Cities in a State for Sports

To many of you, there is an obviousness in what I'm going to spout about.  The wildcards in it might be San Marcos Texas and Tucson Arizona.

If you like directional order as part of your geographic drift, hold on,
...and I'm sorry, because it's going to be a wild ride:

California has some coastess' with some mostest'.  7 major league towns really from 4 areas.
Florida has more than Miami and Tampa.  4 big league ones to be precise.
Ohio has the 3 C's.
Pencil'vania has 2.
Missouri has two.
Same with Tennessee.
Charlotte has a formidable neighbor now in Raleigh.
Texas touts more than a sizeable 4.
New York has more than one metro over a million and the sports towns to tout in bountiful Buffalo.
Baltimore and D.C. are technicalities bunched together on the Corridor.

Indianapolis is pretty lone.  As is Boston.  As is Chicago.  Though they are near enough to the likes of Providence and Milwaukee, respectively.  Jersey is a devil in it's own right.
Ditto Atlanta on some lonesome.  Seattle is but a drive from a Canadian port metropolis.  Denver.  Minneapolis-St. Paul is sandwiched as one big area.
New Orleans.  Detroit.  The city of Oklahoma.  Salt Lake City.  Portland.  Phoenix.  Tucson has enough size to represent Arizona MLS if you ask me.  This could be argued of the like of Toledo, Dayton and Akron someday.  There is some very reachable proximity to bigger towns for those towns.  I speak fondly of San Marcos in this regards to the weekly venues, the footballs, with concerns for Austin and San Antonio.

Soon enough, there may be some affection to speak of in all of this for Las Vegas and Louisville.

And now for some visual pleasure, after throwing your brain around.

Montreal and Mexico Make Sense for MLB Next

Mexico and Montreal for the next expansion make sense.  More so than Charlotte or Portland maybe?
More Canada and some Mexico exponentially make more sense. Definitely population-wise.

They have the populations.  There are exchange rate concerns.  But television money should be able to smooth over any such doubts and alleviate rate woes for any gate tally that MLB calls for day in and night out.

Big league baseball has been proven in Montreal.  And it is an undeniable love in Latin America.

It is said that the money and business isn't in place in the likes of Puerto Rico or Havana.
I say this:  Imagine a ball park much like the one in Williamsport, Pennsylvania (pictured below).  Imagine something akin to an open-seating outfield.  Or picnic seating.  It doesn't have to be your run-of-the-mill American stadium seating.  It can be its own thing.  Do a lottery-seating section.  Get creative.  Put it in Monterrey.  Do a 35k seater in Monterrey and one down in Mexico City.  Spread the love.

Having the Montreal-Monterrey Int'l Expos is a thought.  I've toyed with such an Expos idea sharing with Las Vegas or the East Coast Expos with Puerto Rico and/or Charlotte.

Charlotte and Portland aren't thought to be ready.  Okay, so let's make the telecast and radio audience exponentially explode in growth.

Some unconventional camping North Country and Sur Toros action is my vote.
Check 'em out below.

Canadian Power. Is that a Good Name for a Toronto NFL Team?

I've also floated the French English name before "Nord Force" (like the Mounties).

At least periodically, Canada's NFL franchise could play in Vancouver, in a suitable BC Place, or any other CFL stadium.  The TV is where the big bucks are.  The seating wouldn't be as big a deal as the ratings of Canadians behind their team.

If it was my vote, I'd be for the next NFL expansion having the Kentucky Downs in Louisville and Canadian Power.  The team of all of Canada could be placed in the west or any north-centric division alignment east to west, coast to coast.  And CFL could co-exist.

American Soccer Pyramid and New NEWS

Look at that space in Detroit.

Could there be more interplay between baseball teams like it happens in pro soccer?  More college baseball teams playing big ones like in Spring training?  Just a thought.

wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_soccer_league_system

And in News:

ESPN FC says: ESPNFC.COM
  • At a meeting of the Associated Press Sports Editors last week, Garber said St. Louis and Sacramento were at the front of the line for the league's next round of expansion but added that other worthy candidates, in order of priority, were Detroit, San Diego, San Antonio, Austin and Cincinnati.
And....Cincinnati.
See that?  How fast did they join the conversation.  It happens when you break crowd records.

All in a Name: Great Lakes Megaloppers

I have blogblabbed about possible good names (relevant names) that could evoke pride correlating with a region.  And with my regional theme, I have dreamed of a mult-node place of play tag-team-towns scheme.

For soccer, I've thought of a team called Great Lakes SC.
And hockey had me first thinking about such a brand.  Cleveland and Milwaukee line the lakes and have a hockey showing.  Columbus has a lock on Ohio now and Chicago is butt up against its northern beer neighbor, so my solution was simple with tagging one team between the cities of Milwaukee and Cleveland under the name of Great Lakes.

But while I'm at it, why stay just there?  Indianapolis and Cincinnati are certainly future markets.  In the meantime, why not at minimum make them preseason stints under the Great Lakes name to help the cities buy into the brand?  And the farm teams in all of the mentioned cities can still co-exist all the same.  That's 4 new NHL cities with one team.

Certainly before the Florida Panthers playoff contention, I've beat some drums about that team moving elsewhere.  Ditto for the ugly Coyotes, who in theme, I'd like to become the West Coast Coyotes and share with the likes of Portland and/or Seattle.  But it looks like the NHL wants some wisdom in dropping anchors instead of Vancouver Grizzlies after their southern capital Thrashers fiasco.

But anyway.
There were a few names I have been toying with for the regional brand.  Yep, in relation to the sport's birth to the international coast of Canada, a South Coasters, or plainly "Coasters" or [stealing the name] North Coasters team name would be good.  I've even thought of a team named North Coast playing part-time in the Dakotas and Wisconsin or even Idaho.  North Shore or South Shore is a thought.

Great Lakes Alliance or United has more of a soccer ring to it.  Lakers seems taken in American hearts.  I've even fancied a Yankees hockey brand if the likes of Steinbrenner braved such a bold and trailblazing investment in the idea of a multinodal playing regional team.  "Fleet" has a body of water notion to freeze over.
Armada is good too.

The Great Lakes Megalopolis includes the likes of Blackhawks and Sabres country.

The Most Important American Sports

Let me just pose it as how many of my intellectual contemporaries would say it (hahahaha):

Baseball is tops.  Life is a marathon.
Football gets exciting over the years.
Then Basketball.
Hockey is a good show in towns across America.  And it would be fun to play.
And will Soccer overtake it,....or has the generational respect already arrived?  Generation Z?  Overtaking b-ball?  Indoor leagues aplenty?
Look at revenue required in any city market for a franchise when the Business Journal Expansion cities study comes out each year.

Too Close to Other Sports Markets for Now Though. Sandwiched in Between is some Meat

Indianapolis- Cards, Cubs or Reds
Definitely Columbus-Reds or Indians
In the same ballpark, Louisville clashes with sports countries.
Baltimore is between Philly and D.C. for other sports
Hampton Roads on east coast Virginia is between D.C. and the Carolina country.
OKC isn't as Denver Dallas sandwiched as it once was thought to be.

Expansion takes time.  Captain Obvious says that too.
Before the 1990s, the furthest MLB team south in the southern U.S. in the American League was the Orioles until Tampa Bay landed a full-time team.  In the National League, Houston was the only thing in the heart of the country before pushing eastward into St. Louis until Denver hit mile high.  Atlanta has its dominance of the south until something like Nashville or Charlotte comes along.

Do you have any observations?

With MLB Expansion Comes MiLB Expansion

If you're willing to consider a chunk of miles you can make more cases of being sandwiched.  The world has shrunk.  Distance Decay.  The boob tube and even fast cars.  Regional sports networks make this claim in large chunks of mileage.  For instance, Portland is in a state of its own but between the Bay in California and Seattle in Washington.  It could be said of southern California and Phoenix holding weight with Las Vegas.  It would be a stretch in this regard to say that Albuquerque is at the bottom of a triangle for Texas, Arizona and Colorado teams.  Little Rock is Little Rock and Omaha is what it is also.

Austin has a problem.  It'd be a great and smooth venture for Major League Soccer if not for San Antonio.  And Houston, and Dallas for all the other sports.  Let San Antonio have soccer and Austin have the NHL.  Houston can fill their car with oil and drive to the heart of their state for a change.

San Jose makes its claim for northern Cali's bay area for big time soccer and hockey.  East of them, Salt Lake City touts these big two too.  All of these loosey-goosey thoughts have led me to regional brands.  Austin ice-hockey named Texas_____ (like their place as the Dallas affiliate as the Texas Stars) could make a more palatable draw out of San Antonioans and Houstonians.   I'd argue the same for Columbus, Ohio.  Carolina brands do it right.  Could Missouri do a Kansas City-St. Louis tag team in the NBA?

I have many thoughts throughout the blog.  Combining cities for a team is some.  Compromises like San Marcos for Austin and San Antonio, and an NFL tailgating destination in Alabama created out of thin air, building up an entire town.  What do you got?

NHL:  Las Vegas and Quebec City

MLS:  Charlotte, St. Louis, San Antonio and Sacramento

NBA:  Seattle and Louisville

NFL:  Louisville or Toronto in the east.  Out west is Portland or Oklahoma City.  Jacksonville will move from the Navy town.  London?

MLB:  Portland and Charlotte.  And Tampa will move to Montreal.
