They, along with the version of the Washington Senators which became the Rangers, started play in 1961, representing the first expansion in Major League Baseball since the American League came online in 1901."

The "Modern Era" of baseball is since the early 60's.  And before there were Blue Jays in the 70's, there were Expos in the 60's.
